SDS Canada- Study Direct Stream
Govt of Canada has made some changes to the current Visa stream from India to provide more eligible international students the opportunity to study at a Canadian post-secondary institution and to shorten the visa application processing time.
As of June 8, 2018, the existing Student Partnership Program (SPP) in India will be replaced with the Student Direct Stream (SDS). This new SDS program will replace existing facilitation programs for students not only in India, but China, Vietnam and Philippines.
SDS stands for Study Direct Stream and some may refer this as Student Direct Stream
Below are the mentioned conditions related to SDS CANADA:
- Online Application is to be accepted.
- Overall and even no band less than 6 is acceptable in IELTS.
- Upfront medical examination is required of the student, which should be at least one week before submission of application.
- It increases the speed of the study visa process.
- Systematized visa processing for all SDS institutions, which are eligible for study in Canada.
- Students have to show the payment receipt for the tuition fees paid for one year by them.
- Students need to prepare less documents for further process.
- Students need to buy Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from four banks like, Scotia bank, ICICI Bank Canada, SBI Canada and CIBC Bank. The cost of GIC remains the same as SPP, i.e. Canadian Dollar 10,000/- which covers all living expenses for first year of stay in Canada.
- SDS acts as a substitute for SPP in India. But it certainly does not bar students to study in Canada who do not fall under the conditions of SDS.
- Students in Non SDS can also apply and get study permit in Canada if they get admission in DLI institutes with PG Work rights or paid co op arrangements.

Ban on subclass 457 & its impact on the student visa
The recent ban on subclass 457 visa announced by the Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is only on temporary work visa and different visa category than the Post study work. This ban would not have any impact on the Post Study work visa category which is subclass 485 or the part time work visa for international students in Australia. This ban effects the people who have applied/are looking to directly apply as foreign workers for temporary work visa with sponsorship from an Australian employer. Indirectly, it indicates that if anyone wants to migrate to Australia they first need to study in Australia for a period of 2 years for a degree related course and opt PSW leading to migration. This indirectly strengthens the study route to Australia and also the numbers for Australia will grow.
