Indians have always been keen on traveling abroad, especially for international education. But this concept was limited to big business families and bureaucrat’s kids until the late 80s. Then came the liberalization and Indians were exposed to the world in many ways and international education was one of them.
And there came the year 2000, after which the idea of study abroad really took off and Indians started sending their kids abroad for higher education, but the motivation was not only the education, but the stay back options, post study. This was seen as green pasture for settling kids to their lives and where they can secure their future with better livelihoods and living standards.
And post 2009, it was the main aim of the families, especially up north- Punjab/Haryana to send their kids abroad for studies and settle them there. The main destinations were Canada, Australia, UK and USA. The easier the immigration rules, the more popular the destination. Canada took the major chunk of the pie and absorbed hundreds of thousands as permanent residents before the BIG announcement came in mid of December 2023, Increase of GIC complemented with introduction of PAL (provincial Acceptance Letter) before the Visa submission. Australia too introduced a cap on recruitment of International students to curb the housing crisis domestically, hence mass visa refusals in Feb '24.
Then comes the lull in the market and suddenly, which was among the most lucrative and happening industries, dried like a lake of drought. And here comes the statement of the Ambassador of Germany, Inviting Indian students to study in German Universities.

Germany is facing major labor shortages and an aging population. Estimates suggest there will be a need of over 7 million skilled workers in Germany by 2035 and even currently there are more than 7 lacs unfilled jobs in Germany.
Germany’s economic Minister, Robert Habeck emphasized the need for migration to fuel the economy and bridge the ever-increasing gap of labor shortages through inducting International students. Currently there are approx. 43000 Indian students studying in Germany, which is very less as compared to any other International study destination, where Indians study. So there is a huge scope of more Indian students studying in Germany in future.
Germany is the 3rd largest economy in the world, after US & China, but if we look at the area wise, this would be the Number 1, because Germany is very small compared to US & China. International students are just 14% of total student strength in Germany, whereas in Australia and Canada this strength is as high as 50%. This is another factor, why there is too much scope for Indian students to study and grow in Germany.
Average wage rate for part time workers in Germany is Euro 12-15 which is highest among other study destinations and as per Expatica.com, average monthly salary of full-time worker in Germany is EURO 4105, which is also on the higher side compared to other developed countries.
